General info about hiring a nanny

Bonjour à tous.

I have begun searching for resources to answer some of these general questions about hiring a French-speaking nanny, but I felt that getting personal (even anecdotal) input from those of you in this particular community would be more precise.

We are a French/American family in Park Slope Brooklyn with a bilingual 3-yr-old daughter who currently goes to preschool full time. We are looking into the possibility of hiring a French nanny this fall, depending on our situation. If our (then) 4-yr-old gets in to a Pre-K program, we would need someone to pick her up in the afternoon and keep her until we get home at around 6pm.

Additionally, we hope to add another child to the family by the end of the year. If that happens, then the position would become full-time once the infant was a few months old.

My questions are these:

  1. Are there nannies who accept part-time jobs (from 2:30 to 6:30pm or so)? If so, what would the going rate be, give or take?
  2. For the more full-time situation, are there French nannies who don't live in
  3. We would love to host an au pair, but our space would not currently permit this. Does anyone know a ballpark figure of salaries for this type of arrangement?
  4. And finally, what is the legal procedure for hiring a nanny? Would we become employers in the sense where we would be responsible for collecting or managing points such as employment tax, social security, etc.? I understand we would need to report salaries to the IRS; is this correct?

Many thanks for your answers! We just moved here from France and, although I am originally American, I feel like a foreigner when it comes to the systems surrounding child care and education in New York.

  • 1.) Yes, there are Part - Time French Nannies. The starting rate is $10 per hour for someone with little experience, little education, ***or *** those interested in a position immediately. In 2013, I found a lovely French native babysitter, with a college degree, who was safe and reliable, and wonderful with children at this rate. (She is now a real estate agent.)

The median rate is $15 per hour. At this rate, I found a PhD student, who was also employed as a research assistant, and wished to supplement her salary. (She is now back in France as an assistant professor at a small college.)

The higher rate is $20 - $150 per hour (for PhD level tutors) dependent on education, experience, and background. Time spent emailing to coordinate schedules, nanny meals, and transportation are usually NOT compensated by the employer, BUT I like to do this if the nanny "goes the extra mile", and is especially wonderful with the children, or during special occasions.

3.) Au Pairs usually cost $32K annually, with air transportation costs, agency fees, a living expense allowance, and salary. This cost does NOT include housing, and related expenses (laundry, meals, utilities, and other expenses paid by the employer), as the Au Pair must have their own bedroom, and is limited to work no more than 45 hours per week. Other limitations include: No children under 3 months old; no children under 2 years old, unless the Au Pair has 200 hours of infant experience; no more than 3 consecutive years employed as an Au Pair, with the usual term being 12 months; between the age of 18 - 26 years, with secondary school education, background, mental, and physical health checked; not legally employable in the USA, except as a J1Visa Au Pair. Enrollment as a student in an accredited school, and volunteer work are allowed.

4.) GENERALLY: Yes, you are responsible for Babysitter / Domestic Taxes when: You pay the Babysitter directly (not through an agency, or referral service); AND you are the Babysitter's primary source of employment, or income; AND when you pay the Babysitter at least $1.9K in a calendar year (January 1st through December 31st). FICA Taxes are 15.3% of the income you pay the Babysitter (with 7.65% paid by you, and 7.65% paid by the Babysitter), AND Federal and State Unemployment Tax, which is state - specific, and an additional tax of about $42.

Generally, you are liable for these taxes, even if your babysitter is 16 or 17 Years Old, if you are the primary source of their employment, or income. (Most states do not allow children under the age of 16 Years Old to work.) If you are related to your Babysitter, you do not have to pay these taxes until he / she is 21 Years Old.

Example with FICA Withholding: Your Babysitter earns $100. The employer's cost is $108. The Babysitter's income is $92. The FICA Taxes are $16, paid by the employer.
