Teaching Assistant Information Sheet
Position: Teaching Assistant in Kindergarten and/or First Grade
Job Classification/Salary: Full Time; 34 hour week; $ 12.00 per hour
Work Week/Hours: Monday through Friday; 8:15 A.M. – 3:15 P.M.
Report to: Theresa Flores, Tflores@schools.nyc.gov
Description:
The Teaching Assistant is responsible for all aspects of the daily operation of the assigned class in conjunction with the Head Teacher, ensuring that each classroom functions at the highest quality standard.
Responsibilities include but may not be limited to the following:
- Assist supervising teacher in organizing and managing the classroom setting so that students have a safe and healthy learning environment
- Aid in planning and implementing the daily program under the direction of the Head Teacher; prepare necessary materials as needed and set up accordingly for the chosen activity
- Track daily attendance
- Ensure that children are protected from any hazards that may pose a potential threat to their physical safety and/or emotional well being
- Help children establish good hygiene (i.e. washing hands); assist in housekeeping tasks if necessary
- Assist children in cafeteria during breakfast and lunch
- Supervise children during recess in the school yard to ensure safety
- Assist in decorating classroom and/or hallways displaying work done by the children
- Check class and/or homework as directed by the Head Teacher
- Maintain a professional attitude, loyalty and committee; treat all children, parents, and colleagues with dignity and respect
- Attend staff facility meetings as necessary
- Observe, record, and report any behavior that is inappropriate. Report any and all concerns regarding children, staff, parents or faculty immediately to the administration
- Assist in planning class trips
Do:
- Clock in daily in the main office, using time cards
- Sign your time card at the end of the month
- See ‘weekly bulletin’ in main office, next to time clock, for any pertinent information
- Read white board in main office daily for any changes to the schedule or weekly bulletin
- Call school telephone before 7:15 A.M. to report an absent; leave message on the absent line, extension 9
- Any change of hours must be cleared by Ms. Flores
Don’t:
- Speak to parent about a child without consulting with the Head Teacher first. Refer parents with questions to the teacher
Do not engage in conversations with parents or care givers during arrivals and dismissal, or at any other time that you are supervising children
