P.S. 58 introduced a Dual Language French/English program in 2007, which began with a Kindergarten class of 24 students. The program has grown to include two classes in all grades from Kindergarten to Fifth Grade.
Each class contains two language populations: English-dominant students (Anglophones) and French-fluent students (Francophones). During the course of the program, each group of children learn the second language.
The entry point for the program is Kindergarten. Most students move up each year as a cohort into the next grade, so there are very limited seats available for French-speaking children in First grade and up. (English speaking children are not admitted in First grade and up because they have missed too many months of French language instruction.)
