I am interested in moving to Williamsburg in 2011 and my daughter will be three in 2011. Is that too young to apply to the bi-lingual Pre-K? She would be in category 2. What area would be the best to live. (ie proximity to school) I've just started my research on the area and bi-lingual schools, so any input would be helpful. Feel free to email me at miaparis5@yahoo.com. Merci!

Hello Parents and Friends,

We are very excited to announce that after meeting with Sereida Rodriguez, the new principal of P.S. 84, we got the green light to debut a French-English dual language program in Fall 2011!

As of right now, the program will start at the Kindergarten level in Fall 2011, with a possibility for a 1st grade level class.

We are in discussions with Principal Rodriguez and the French Embassy to begin integrating special French cultural events into the curriculum and possibly after school beginning in Fall 2010. This way we can start to introduce the idea throughout next year leading up to the kickoff of the official program in Fall 2011.

We know it is late in the year to get the official word on this, but it is HIGHLY ENCOURAGED that any and all parents with children entering K in 2011 (and committed to being involved in the French-English program in Fall 2011) apply to join the Pre-K class at P.S. 84 for Fall 2010. The application process just began last week, so there is still plenty of time. The deadline is April 9th. In addition to the fact that the school already has a highly respected Pre-K program, it is very important for parents to show a genuine commitment to joining the school now.

Below is the link for the NYS Pre-K Admissions online form. Just follow the directions to apply for P.S. 84 The Jose De Diego School in District 14 Brooklyn. It is a magnet school, so everyone from all 5 boroughs are welcome to join the school -- one does NOT need to be zoned for this school to join:

We are incredibly enthusiastic about this development and look forward to working with Principal Rodriguez.

Hi Jennifer,
I was actually thinking of getting a french play group together in the hood with a french teacher but I couldn't figure out where to do it. My daughter is 3 as well.
Any suggestions?
I think it's a great idea!

Any Williamsburg parents out there with toddlers who'd be interested in starting up a French play group? My son will be 3 in November, and I'd love to let him interact with other kids who are speaking/learning French. And, frankly, I could use the practice myself.
If you're interested, post a note here or send me one at jennifer.barrett@gmail.com. Thx!

My son Emile will be in K for fall 2010 and we would be so thrilled if there were a French bilingual program there! We are district 14 and french is Emile's first language. I also know people outside the district who would be interested. When I went for the tour of PS 58 there were far more English-speaking kids interested in the program than they had space for, which testifies to the popularity of this kind of program in general.

What about putting it at PS 84? I understand they have extra space, they definitely have a great location and facilities, and there is already a bilingual spanish program there, so there is a real opportunity to create a very international school environment.

Hi Lea,
Nice to see a face to the name. I really hope we can get this going for 2010. My daughter is starting PreK at 132 this year, so she'll be ready. And I still want to work on the afterschool program as well.
