3438657362?profile=originalFinding talented and qualified teachers is key to the success of dual language programs. On February 4, 2016, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy hosted a ceremony honoring 8 student teachers. They will soon join the ranks of NYC's French dual language programs and obtain their Master's in Bilingual Education.

The French Embassy and FACE Foundation have partnered over the last 3 years with the Société des Professeurs Français et Francophone d’Amérique (SPFFA) to offer an annual scholarship to future bilingual teachers. This year, 8 student teachers from Touro College, City College, Brooklyn College, as well as Hunter College received the $5,000 award:

Andrew Ortner (Hunter College) - Arnaud Berger (Hunter College) - Audrey Conor (Brooklyn College) - Benjamin Grass (Hunter College) - Hawa Sylla (Touro College) - Isonore Dianda (Hunter College) - Laura Sutton (Hunter College & Walden University) - Rabah Foudi (City College).

The $5,000 granted to each awardee is not only meant to encourage students to embrace the teaching professions, and join the bilingual revolution, it also contributes to teacher development with more teachers getting their Master's.

The ceremony's third edition was also an opportunity to honor Anne Berthelot, President of SPFFA, who was made Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques. Anne Berthelot has devoted her career to the promotion of the French language and literature. This award comes in recognition of her renewed commitment to education, as well as her resolve to nurture French literature in the United States.

Dual language programs are founded on an innovative pedagogy, which offers a rare and dynamic hybrid way to learn languages. French dual language programs serve more than 1500 students in 10 NYC schools! They serve French-speaking, English language learners, and non-French speaking students in the same classroom and foster multicultural understanding and intellectual curiosity. Today, we have over 65 teachers involved; but simply put, we need more.
