French Authors on Tour: Philippe Beck

Philippe Beck is a contemporary French poet, writer, and philosopher. He received his PhD in Philosophy from Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in 1994 under the direction of Jacques Derrida. Beck teaches at The European Graduate School and at the Centre Atlantique de Philosophie. He has published 14 books of poetry, an intellectual biography: Beck l’impersonnage (Beck the Impersonality, 2006), a book of prose: A Journal (Un Journal, 2008), and translations from Walter Benjamin, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and others. He has collaborated on the composition of operatic and choral pieces, and acted as editor-in-chief of the journal Quaderno.

Zinc Bar Reading Series was founded in 1993 by Joe Elliot and has become a Sunday evening tradition among writers in New York.  Over the course of its 500+ readings to date, Zinc Reading Series has welcomed poets from five continents and has paired established and emerging writers from many different traditions.

French Opera: A Paradoxical Genre

Vincent Giroud is Professor at Université de Franche-Comté; author of William Walton, Composer; St. Petersburg; Picasso and Gertrude Stein; French Opera: A Short History (Yale UP, 2010). The author of the recently published French Opera: A Short History (Yale University Press, 2010), discusses some of the paradoxes and specific characters of the French operatic tradition, which he claims is second only to Italian opera in terms of richness and variety.

Paul LeClerc, a scholar of the French Enlightenment, will be retiring in June 2011 from his position as president of the New York Public Library, where he has served admirably since 1993. To mark this occasion, Paul LeClerc is joined by Bruno Racine, president of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, for a wide-ranging conversation about the future of libraries in the digital age moderated by Paul Holdengräber.
