Preschool children are great to be with and their curiosity for knowledge as well as their ways of imitating adults will really amaze you. However, you shouldn't expect this to last long because preschoolers are noted for some behaviors that may not be easy to handle. Aggressive behaviors such as biting, fighting, temper tantrums are common among them. Experts are of the opinion that 95% of aggressive behaviors among preschool children are not to be worried about. The proper handling of the negative behaviors by parents, teachers and other child care givers is what should be of great importance.

The right of a child to feel angry or frustrated should be accepted but you should not tolerate aggressive behaviors that may arise from such emotions. The difficult children should be assisted in recognizing their feelings of anger as well as frustration and the behaviors that could possibly arise from such feelings. They should be taught words that they will use to communicate their feelings of anger and frustration.

Besides, the children should be encouraged to discuss their feelings with you. Words like 'You look angry. What happened?' can make them open up to you. You should have a hearty discussion on the issue with them and ask them their opinions about why the other children behaved in such a manner that was frustrating. Analyze the situation together with them and you shouldn't be in a hurry to end the discussion.

You should avoid getting angry with difficult children because by staying calm, they will be able to understand that they are not behaving properly. Explain to them why you will not tolerate certain behaviors because preschoolers are fond of the 'why' of everything. Let them know that you are not angry with them but their behaviors.

You can make use of 'time out' method to handle difficult behaviors. Difficult children should be isolated in a private place for about five minutes when their behaviors get out of control. During 'time out', they will be able to calm down and when you call them back after the five minutes, you should explain to them why they were isolated and what they should do and not do in future to avoid isolation.

It is important to be a role model to preschool children because they tend to learn faster from the behaviors of adults. You should avoid getting angry with them and when you find yourself angry or frustrated, you should calm down and take a deep breath to clear your emotions before talking to them.
