North Yarmouth Academy is pleased to announce that it is offering a French Language Mastery Program that provides an opportunity for students to graduate from NYA with complete fluency in the language while building a deeper appreciation for and knowledge of French culture and traditions. Because we live in a 21st Century global society, NYA seeks to provide academic programs that meet the needs of today’s students. This new initiative is unique in its approach. Students will follow two tracks – an immersion in French language and culture that runs concurrently with our established college preparatory academic program.

The Language Mastery Program will commence in the 2012-2013 academic year at the Middle School level. Students in grades six through eight will be eligible to enroll in an intensive French language class in Fall 2012-13. Seventh and eighth grade students in this program will study Civics and Economics and American History in French. Other core classes of English, Mathematics, Science and Fine Arts will be taken in English.

As students advance into the Upper School, they will continue their study of French Language and Culture along with the NYA History curriculum in French. During the second semester of their sophomore year, students will live with a host family and study at a comparable private high school in France.

While reaping the benefits of an educational, cultural and linguistic immersion experience in a French school, students will continue their required English and Mathematics curriculum on-line with NYA faculty. Upon their return to NYA for their junior and senior years, students will continue their course of study in specially-designed courses that deepen their understanding of French language, culture, and tradition. (Current NYA students in French III and above will be eligible to participate in the semester in France.)

Students who successfully complete this course of study will be awarded a French Mastery Diploma from North Yarmouth Academy.
